Our Global Women of Faith Network brings together diverse women inspired by faith to ensure that women are not simply included, but also leading our work.
Women are the peacebuilders our world needs. While their roles in peace and security are now more mainstream than ever before, the inspiration women draw from their faith remains largely unexplored.
Led by the International Women’s Coordinating Committee, the Global Women of Faith Network consists of religious women’s organisations at the national and regional levels in Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, the Middle East and North Africa, and North America.
The International Women’s Coordinating Committee (IWCC) leads the Global Women of Faith Network. It is comprised of 11 women from diverse faith backgrounds, elected by their peers at our 10th World Assembly in 2019. Representing the priorities of their faith traditions and regions, they stand as a voice for women and gender equality within our movement.
Women disproportionately bear the burden of conflict, poverty, and inequality. Yet they remain hidden leaders, often working behind the scenes to build peace creatively and collaboratively.
For that very reason, from 11-13 November 2020, Religions for Peace is convening the first Assembly on “Women, Faith and Diplomacy: Keeping the Faith and Transforming Tomorrow” to shed light on how faith inspires in diplomatic spaces by focusing on the diverse forms of expertise leveraged in decision-making. This hybrid conference— operating both in person and virtually— will feature regional spotlights, prominent faith, political and media leaders, interactive interviews, and audio-visual panels.
In 2019, women of faith leaders in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) led a delegation to Jordan to forge a historic partnership for peace in the region. This coalition brought together women from Sunni, Shia, Christian, Jewish, and other traditions to serve as a high-level platform to campaign for not simply peace, but also the inclusion of women in peace processes.
The partnership was highlighted during Religions for Peace’s 10th World Assembly in a special session entitled, “MENA Women as Peacemakers.” These women issued a bellowing call for visible women’s leadership within the Religions for Peace global movement, urging all to champion the role of women in decision-making.
The Restoring Dignity Campaign empowers and mobilises people of faith to prevent violence against women around the world. This initiative included the launch of a worldwide youth campaign to say NO to violence against women; implementation of small projects in seven countries to address gender-based violence; and the dissemination of the Restoring Dignity toolkit for religious communities and leaders developed by Religions for Peace.
