Religions for Peace Advocates for a Nuclear-Free World

Religions for Peace International, in partnership with the African Council of Religious Leaders, on March 4, hosted an impactful dialogue at the United Nations during the Third Meeting of State Parties to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW). The side event, titled “Interfaith, Intergenerational, and Inter-sectoral Dialogue on the Moral Imperatives to Eliminate Nuclear Weapons,” brought together global leaders to address the urgent need for nuclear disarmament.

Dr. Francis Kuria, Secretary General of Religions for Peace, highlighted the moral obligation of faith traditions to reject nuclear weapons, which represent profound ethical transgressions. Other distinguished speakers, including Dr. Adedeji Ebo of the UN Office for Disarmament Affairs and Hon. Melissa Parke of ICAN, reinforced the call for a world free from the shadow of nuclear threats. They emphasized that resources invested in nuclear arsenals should instead be redirected toward initiatives that promote human security and sustainable development.

The dialogue also featured voices such as Rev. Dr. Yoshinori Shinohara, who underscored the historical advocacy of Japanese religious leaders for peace, and Imam Shamsi Ali, who urged faith-based communities to challenge government investments in nuclear arms. Lydia Ndinda, a young activist, highlighted the importance of engaging youth in raising awareness and advancing disarmament efforts.

The event concluded with a collective commitment to advocate for the elimination of nuclear weapons. Religions for Peace International reaffirmed its dedication to fostering collaboration among faith-based actors, civil society, and policymakers to achieve a nuclear-free world that upholds human dignity and life. By amplifying the moral imperatives of disarmament, this initiative aligns with the vision of peace and justice that defines Religions for Peace’s mission.
