Rissho Kosei-kai was established during a time when Japanese society found itself greatly affected by World War II. In these circumstances, members strive using skillful means to help people resolve problems of daily life such as extreme poverty, incurable illness, and domestic conflict, and to lead them to the Dharma.
Rev. Kunitomi manages the Secretariat in Tokyo with 1,000 staff members. Rissho Kosei-kai is actively engaged in peacebuilding and interfaith action across the globe.
Rev. Kunitomi graduated from the Faculty of Economics, the University of Tokyo, and he entered Gakurin Buddhist Seminary, Rissho Kosei-kai in 1976. After working for the Niwano Peace Foundation since 1978, he was appointed as the Minister of Toyohashi Dharma Center in 1989 and the Minister of San Francisco Dharma Center in the United States in 1994. Then he was appointed as the Director of the Youth Department Dharma Missions Bureau in 1997 and the Director of the Secretariat Department of Rissho Kosei-kai in 2003. In 2011, he held the Director of Tokyo dissemination area and Minister of Suginami Dharma Center. In the same year, he was appointed as Trustee of Rissho Kosei-kai, and since 2019 he has served as Chair of Board of Trustees.
In Religions for Peace Japan, he held a member of the Disarmament and Reconciliation Committee from 2003 to 2011, a Councilor from 2009 to 2011 and a Board member from 2012 to 2015. He has served as Secretary General from 2015 to 2020. Currently, he is a Board member.
Also, he has been a member of the Executive Committee of Religions for Peace Asia/ ACRP since 2015 and an Auditor since 2019.
