He was elected in 2018 to a second term as president of the Peruvian bishops’ conference after serving the first term from 2009 to 2012. He was a founder of the Catholic University of Trujillo, where he serves as grand chancellor and is also vice grand chancellor of the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru in Lima.
He was elected to head the Latin American bishops’ council, or CELAM, in 2019.
