H.E. Dr. Mehmet Görmez
President, Presidency of Religious Affairs in Turkey
Co-President, Religions for Peace
His Eminence, Dr. Mehmet Gormez serves as the President of the Presidency of Religious Affairs in Turkey, meaning that this position, combined with his identity as a Muslim clergyman, makes him the most highly authoritative Muslim cleric in Turkey. He has not earned this distinction without good reason. Thoroughly an academic, Dr. Gormez began his academic career earning his Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Ankara in the late 1980s, also earning his Doctorate from the same university in 1995. Between these times, he frequented universities throughout the world, speaking, researching and teaching--most notably at Cairo University immediately following the completion of his Bachelor’s Degree and at Hacettepe University from 2001-2003.
As President of the Presidency of Religious Affairs (to which he was appointed in 2010), Dr. Gormez frequently meets with religious leaders in order to facilitate interreligious discussion and action. In this way, he has become involved with not only RfP but significant religious organizations, such as the Roman Catholic Church, having me with more than one Pope on several occasions. Dr. Gormez’ vast knowledge of Islam and his dedication to a role of Religious representation and communication fits him well within Religions for Peace’s World council.
